|
|
| I find it all too easy to (for example) click on a scroll bar but pick up an adjacent folder instead and drag it to an unwanted and subsequently unfindable location. One can set an option to require confirmation before overwriting a file. Is there a way to require confirmation before moving a file or folder, even if doing so doesn't overwrite anything? |

Not that I am aware of.
But if there were; and you used it; I will bet dollars to donuts it will become so reflexive to click OK that after a while you will find that you still move the (unintended) item to the (unintended) destination.
It has happened to me often enough that I avoid using drag & drop whenever possible, preferring to move items between panes via F6.
My long-time personal request for mitigation of this common usage error is to have an UNDO function for moves. But nikos has claimed it cannot be implemented with any reasonable effort, given the existing framework of x2. |

see this post: www.zabkat.com/blog/02Mar08.htm
in particular for accidental moves use Goto > Drop target menu |

there is a setting within the settings editor to DISABLE left-click dragging of files. may be useful.
close all instances of x2 first
open the settings editor
goto the Layout Tab, and in the Misc section
locate "turn off left drag-n-drop (right drag ok)".
may be of use to you, if not to others too

Fact is, that regarding this "safety belt" x2 is definitly far behind WE, but naming the product (in words) "Explorer squared" this should not happen.
At least - but not sufficient - if it is possible to go to the last drop target via GoTo-command (that implies, that x2 does something like logging), I do not see, why it should not be possible to tell, where the targets have been for the last (2, 3, ...) copy / move actions via F5 / F6 or others, deletions, renamings. In the contrary: drag & drop is a standard Windows action, at least actions via F5 / 6 / 9 a.s.o. go via explicit x2 commands. _________________ Thomas |

Thanks for all the tips. I've tried turning off left click & drag and will see how that works out. GoTo last drop should also be useful.
The long-extinct Norton File Manager had an Undo feature, but I found it never worked well, and as I recall often crashed the program so I stopped using it. This lends support to Nikos' assertion about the difficulty of implementing such a feature. Better to prevent the problem in the first place than try to recover from it afterwords - that's why a drag & drop confirmation option would be very useful (an option which NFM also had!) |

The problem with this file manager was the fact, that Symantec did only a half-baked upgrade for FAT32. NFM came out with W95 original, and that was still FAT16 only.
BTW, the undo function of ths product, which was named Norton Navigator, was not for the file manager only, but it worked system-wide. So the difficulty was in this case much greater, as an undo for a given file manager only. The half-baked FAT32 adaption came - no surprise from today's view - at the time, when Symantec lost the old quality of the Norton products.
Historical side-note: At that date - roundabout 10 years ago - the old Commander, which had already bee buried, came to a second live. But it was too late, the second live was very short. Today he lives via his children in spirit. In X2 this spirit is still active with the actually not really changable shortcuts F5 / F6 and some more. But when I saw X2 the very first time it reminded me at once in several details to the Navigator file manager, which I really liked in the days of FAT16 W95. And this file manager had one feature, which I really would like to see today: Flattening a folder branch, but not in a scrap pane (Norton did not have this), but in the main window. The user could switch and the file pane showed the flattened tree of the folder, which was selected in the tree pane (using the x2-terms here for better understanding). _________________ Thomas |

I completely agree with Cosmo about NFM's file flattening feature. In fact, obsolete though it is, I still keep it on my computer and use it for exactly that feature.
Other features I really liked about NFM: Easy one-click access to different customized views. Easy choice of not to send a deleted file to the recycle bin (or alternatively to wipe delete / shred it). A quick-viewer that could be placed below the tree & folder panes over the full width of the screen. Easy customization of menus, shortcuts, filters, etc. |
